Reproductive Health: Defining the Scopes and Processes

Reproductive health is always of paramount value. An individual’s ability to conceive depends on how they improve or maintain their reproductive health. These days, Reproductive Medicine is one of the best solutions to do so.

What is Reproductive Medicine?

There are many branches of medicine that deals with a specific condition. Contrary to popular belief, Reproductive Medicine is actually one of the first ever branch to deal with a specific condition. The first ever written work about it dates back to 1237 A. D. It was entitled “The Complete Book of Effective Prescriptions for Diseases of Women” and was published in China.

Reproductive Medicine deals with a variety of issues that stem from the process of conception. Through fields such as Anatomy, Endocrinology and Physiology, the branch has produced a strong foundation that can deal with anything about reproduction.

Though it aims to eradicate all possible reproductive problems, Reproductive Medicine is also tasked with the maintenance of an individual’s reproductive health. This branch is not limited merely during the stages of pregnancy. A woman’s health is just as valuable during and after the baby is born.

The Scope and the Overlapped Disciplines

The most valuable treatment of reproductive health will always be through education. Reproductive Medicine deals with more than just the application of treatment. It also deals with the bigger issues, like puberty, family planning, reproductive diseases and of course, infertility.

The branch of Reproductive Medicine is vast and has been known to overlap nearly every facet of reproductive health. Aside from Endocrinology and Infertility, and Andrology, it has also dealt with Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatric Endocrinology to some extent.

The Processes of Reproductive Medicine

Although medication plays a major part in the process of Reproductive Medicine, it is not the only one under this branch. Here are three of the known methods under Reproductive Medicine.

  • Fertility Medication. Rightfully so, Fertility Medication are drugs that allow for the stimulation of reproductive fertility. By developing the follicles in the ovary, a woman can easily become fertile.
  • Reproductive Surgery. This method is mostly known to prevent men from further being able to impregnate women (the most popular of which, Vasectomy). But recently, it has helped in doing the contrary as well. Surgical Sperm Retrieval (if Vasectomy has been done) and the treating of Fallopian Tube Obstruction are some of the ways Reproductive Surgery can deal with certain pregnancy issues.
  • In Vitro Fertilization. The most common practice of conceiving an embryo outside of the body is one of the methods to which Reproductive Medicine has been so well known of. IVF is considered to be the most effective, but is exercised more as a last resort for those who still fail in other methods.
